The Library was closed yesterday in recognition of Emancipation Day.
On April 16, 1862, President Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act that effectively freed over 3,000 people held in slavery in the District of Columbia. This was, of course, 9 months before the Emancipation Proclamation abolished slavery elsewhere in the United States.
Sometimes living in the capitol of the country has its advantages, and other times you're denied the right to representation.
Anyway, there was no art project yesterday. Instead enjoy the some art from DC natives and residents and for the adults, be sure to check out DC by the Book, an awesome project that maps DC through fiction set in the city.
