It's hard to find enough good books for a story time on Groundhog's Day. But expand your theme to shadows and silhouettes and the ideas start rolling in.
Song: Good Morning Dear Earth
Flannel: Alphabet Soup- SHADOW
Song: Open, Shut Them
Book: The Foggy, Foggy Forest
by Nick Sharrat
Song: Shake Your Sillies Out from The Singable Songs Collection (20th Anniversary Special Edition)
Song: Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
Flannel: Groundhog's Shadow
Book: My Shadow
by Robert Louis Stevenson
Baby Bounce: Criss Cross, Line, Line
Song: Itsy Bitsy Spider
Song: Turn Around from Getting to know Myself
Make and Take: Shadow Play
Supplies:
-construction paper
-white paper
-black paper
-scissors
-glue sticks
-crayons
Process: Before story time I cut out 5 shapes (tow truck, train, cat, dog, and elephant these were also the shadows that the groundhog saw in my version of Groundhog's Shadow) in both black and white. I glued the black "shadow" piece to a colorful piece of construction paper. After story time, the kids matched the white object piece to it's shadow piece, glued it on and decorated it.
Time: Prep took way too long. If you have accucut pieces, use those and it will go much more quickly. Craft took 15 minutes.
